WHO ARE WE?
Located at the foothills of the Cascades, near Buckley, Washington, Griffin Place is a Thoroughbred breeding farm. We are actively involved in breeding and marketing, and we are committed to the Washington Thoroughbred industry. We are BREEDING FOR EXCELLENCE.
Excellence starts with good mares, and we have assembled what we think is an outstanding broodmare band. It includes Washington Champion, SW BEST JUDGEMENT, SW ATOYAC, dam of SW KEAGAN, winner of the Turf Paradise Derby, SW BLONDAWAY, Campanita (½ to G1 SW RINGS A CHIME) now the dam of Sp Rain Shadow and Sp Bella Campana, and Prado’s Joy, dam of SW SPANISH HIGHWAY. We purchased, and have since sold, the dam of multiple G1SW TOCCET. We retired Sp Briar de La Rose, dam of CHAMPION MULCAHY, SW BOLD MAGESTRATE, dam of CH BEST JUDGEMENT, and SW OUTOFTHEBLUEBELL, BROODMARE OF THE YEAR, dam of G1 SW RINGS A CHIME, granddam of G1 SW COUNTRY STAR. OUTOFTHEBLUEBELL was our foundation mare and she is greatly missed since her death in 2007. See our
horses for a full list of our mares.
We have a strong history of breeding, raising and selling top class horses. We were Washington’s Leading Breeder by money won in 2000. That year, two of our homebreds, RINGS A CHIME and BEST JUDGEMENT became Washington Champions. RINGS A CHIME became our first G1 stakes winner, and Washington Horse of the Year. Her dam, OUTOFTHEBLUEBELL was voted Broodmare of the Year.
In 2002 we had incredible good fortune when our mare, Cozzene’s Angel produced TOCCET who became the second leading two-year old in the nation by money won and a multiple G1 winner. TOCCET won the G1 Champagne at Belmont, the G1 Hollywood Futurity at Santa Anita, the G2 Remsen at Aqueduct, the Laurel Futurity and set a new record for graded stakes wins by a two-year old.
The year 2005 hallmarked a defining year for us in the sale ring. We topped the Keeneland January sale when Cozzene’s Angel sold for $1,350,000. Then we topped both Washington sales. Our Tribunal filly out of Bold Magestrate brought $100,000 in the WTBA summer sale, and we were the agent for Carnation Farm’s Free At Last colt out of Northern Whirl, later named WILD CYCLE which was the high seller at the Winter Mixed Sale and went on to be a WA CHAMPION. An unprecedented achievement.
We do not stand stallions but we own multiple shares in the Washington stallions CAHILL ROAD, DELINEATOR, FREE AT LAST, HE’S TOPS, MATTY G, PRIVATE GOLD and RAISE THE BLUFF.
We continue to be active supporters of the Washington Thoroughbred industry. Mary Lou is a member of the WTBA Board of trustees, the WTBA Finance Committee, the Northwest Race Series Committee, chairman of the Magazine Committee, a member of the WSU Equine Health Advisory Board, and alumni of Colorado State University. In addition, Griffin Place proudly supports the Racetrack Chaplaincy program and sponsors the WTF Art Show, children’s division.
